5th of March 2020
Today I began with having 4 ideas with small explanations of each piece and the contents of them. I then began writing down what were my top 3 ideas were.
6th of March 2020
I continued writing down my top 3 ideas, what they are about and how they came to be and a synopsis of the each piece. I then wrote a reason to why I did not decided to do my C0DE:PKD/ short film and I feel that my reason is acceptable and valid.
11th of March 2020
Today I began creating my proposal for my final major project where I talked about the past 2 years on this course, how I have improved etc, and then I also started writing my project concept where I went over what the documentary consisted of in a basic form.
12th of March 2020
I have finished writing my reason of why I have chosen to do the documentary instead of the other 3 ideas I had and I will now be continuing to complete my proposal for the piece and after that I will create my schedule for my production, all the way from research to the post production editing.
20th of March 2020
I have completed the proposal for the final major project and will now be moving onto the research part of the project. I will be looking into different documentaries created in the form of biographical filmmaking, directors who have inspired me to make documentaries, and also directors who have made similar documentaries to the documentary I am making. I will then also research into age ratings to fine what will be the accurate target audiences, the equipment needed etc. This will all be included in my presentation pitch. I have also began filling in my production schedule, this will help me to keep on track of what needs to be completed by a certain date to make sure I do not overboard myself with work. It will also help as it allows me to be able to structure my work times, allowing me to have breaks and plan where I need more days for example with editing and filming. Hopefully this will help me improve my time management.
24th of March 2020
Today I have completed the production schedule and will begin creating my pitch presentation which is due in on Friday. I will also be making a start on a proof plan to prepare me for any barries that may obstruct my path so to speak. With the rising situation of COVID-19 I believe I need to make preprations and “Plan B’s” for any problems it may bring to the table and any other obstacles I may face, for example with the COVID-19 Lockdown, I may not be able to have interviews with certain members in person, which means I will have to resort to video call over the internet, or audio phone calls.
28th of March 2020
On the 26th of March I completed the Pitch presentation for my project and happy with the way it turned out. I felt like it had all the neccesary information needed and hope that it is up to the standard needed for the grade I want to achieve. Today I created a questionnaire for my final major project to find out if people will be interested in the documentary and its topics, I will then look through the answers given in the questionnaire and figure if there need to be any changes made to my project. Hopefully everyone will like the idea and I can continue on as planned.
7th of April 2020
I know its a big gap since my last journal entry, the past few days I have lost all motivation and sleep during this COVID – 19 lockdown, it has affected a lot of us in many ways, mostly mentally. All my productivaty went out the window however, I have brought myself back together and today I created and completed my Risk Assessment which can be seen in the Pre – Prouction section. I have also looked over the questionnaires I sent out and saw that every completed questionnaire had no problems with the subject matter or content planned for the project which makes me very happy! No one said they would be offended or uncomfortable with discussion of drugs and alchohol, or even uncensored swearing. This has boosted my confidence in this project and I cannot not wait to see the final piece.
25th of April 2020
Well getting things in order went out of the window. Since my last journal entry I have completed my research section and have begun my pre – production with making a list of questions I have for the members of the band and specific questions for certain members to go along side the others. I have taken into account also that with the current world state, I will have to research into video call software such as Skype, Facebook’s Video Call, Discord and Zoom for example. I have been told about Zoom from members of the band and on social media etc, as school, colleges and universities are using it at the moment to do their online classes. Hopefully I can get my act together and get more progress done with this and actually stick to my schedule, we’ll see how that goes in the next journal entry.
6th of May 2020
I have updated the Research section to have my research on different video call applications such as Zoom, Skype Discord etc. During my research I have come to a cross roads, Zoom was suggested by the members of the band, and I have no problems downlaoding the application and figuring out how it works etc, however I already know how Discord works, but I do not want to make it inconvinent for them as they will have to download the application, make a new account etc, I’d rather them use something they are comfortable with than having to learn a completely different application that they will probably never use again.
16th of May 2020
It has been exactly 10 days since my last journal entry and contiuation of this project, I have lost all motivation due to the lockdown, my body clock and perception of time is none existant. With COVID – 19 situation and the restrictions it has on my work I will not be handing in a complete documentary for my final major project as this I know it will not turn out as well as it could be and how I want it to be. This project is not just for college, it is a passion project that I want to be done right, with enough time and work spent on it to make it the documentary I envision in my mind, because of this I have decided to create a trailer for the documentary with the footage I have and then create the documentary in my own time outside of college and when this whole pandemic is over, so all the work being done after this journal entry will be for the trailer, for example pre production work like storyboards etc.
28th of May 2020
On the 22nd of May I began creating the 2nd trailer for my documentary, I took screenshots and documented the editing process in my ‘Post Production’ section of my wordpress. The editing, while it was a slow process, came out well and I am happy with the finished product. The trailer itself with edited and completed (at the time of writing) yesterday on the 27th of may, however it wasn’t until today that I completed the post production section of my wordpress.
All in all I am happy with how it turned out, I have had my girlfriend Hannah, my nan, my grandad, and the members of the band look at each trailer and give me their thoughts of which one they prefered and why. Most of them said that the second trailer (the one seen in my post production) is their prefered choice as it is faster paced, making them want to see what comes next, which is needed in a trailer. My uncle suggested that I take aspects from the 1st trailer, for example the discussion at the beginning where Jon talks about how the others only exist when he is around, and add them into the second trailer.
I do want to tweak both trailer slightly with minor changes such as colour grading, timing and pacing however, I would happily give in what I have now if need be with no problems. I am torn between whether I should give in either one of the trailers or just hand in both together, as they both show different sides of the band, I will decide closer to the date, but for now I will tweak the trailers where need be and complete the evaluation section of my wordpress.
